How to use Mantra to Heal
This practice works especially well for resolving anxiety and learning how to relax, accept and excel in life.
Mantras are high frequency food in the form of sound. They provide a kind of energetic nourishment that is very healing and adaptogenic. Mantras are healing energy fields you vibrate in your cells just by reciting them or playing them. I realize this sounds fantastical and new age woo woo to the nth degree. I am discussing it here at length because I’ve found that surprisingly they work very effectively. Mantra practice can help solve a lot of real issues.
I explained recently what mantra is and how it works here. Today I share more about how I use mantra in my daily life and why.
Reciting mantras creates a kind of psychic heat the yogis call tapa. Repetition of mantra is a practice called japa. Jap means repeat. So japa creates tapa, and this energy can “burn away the karma”. Karma is the law of cause and effect. Every action has a corresponding reaction, and some actions reverberate through time and cause reactions way later. The way I see it, the mantra sound currents created in your energy field speed your system up so you can fly past issues that you would otherwise get caught up in. I have noticed mantra practice working for me this way quite well.
The best way to find out about mantras is to press play and try them out. You can listen, recite silently, whisper them and speak them out loud. All three work but if you really want faster results chanting out loud is recommended.
Please note: no belief systems are required for mantras to work. You do not need to identify in any kind of way. The kundalini mantras are non-denominational and compatible with all genuine religions. Use these sounds to become better at whoever you choose to be.
There are three main ways I recommend working mantra in to your life. The first way is to just play it in your environment - the more the better. A great use for an old phone is to set it to play a mantra on repeat, plug it in and just leave it somewhere. I will also get in to how to make your own “mantra box” some time soon. Essentially what you are doing is creating a high frequency energy field that acts like an air filter but for vibes. This is especially helpful to place in a bedroom. Also try this in a work space or anywhere that needs uplifting energy.
The second way is a little more intense. Pick a mantra, learn it, and then do a specific amount of recitations of it each day. 108 is a good number. This can go very quickly if you choose a short mantra like wahe guru, or can take hours to complete for some of the longer mantras. Either way, this is a great practice especially for you type A people out there. If you are goal oriented, and need some mental peace in your life, try this. Get some mala beads or try this digital ring counter. You can also count in your head but having a tool to help count allows the mind to get more focused on just the sound. Also note: your recitations can be out loud or silent - both count and work. However, choose out loud if you are really needing fast results.
Lastly, I present “Walking Around Mantra”.
This is when you pick a mantra and just decide to use it all the time. You train your mind to go to the mantra instead of over thinking everything. This can be done out loud but mostly you do this mantra silently in your mind.
I have found that this practice provides something positive for the mind to latch on to when you are experiencing anxiety. Instead of endlessly looping worry thoughts you redirect the mind to repeat the mantra. It is an immediate upgrade and it gets more powerful with time, the more you do it.
This habit also creates an energetic structure in your aura that is very protective. Your thoughts and mental streams exist, flowing in and around your energy field. You can add in a very strong shielding energy by weaving mantra in to your mental processes, which is also weaving into your auric field. The energy of these mantras are very sophisticated. They allow you to be more open to the energies that are beneficial to you while keeping you protected.
How to do it:
1. Choose a mantra. Any mantra you know well can be used but simple mantras work best to start. Try these~
Sat Nam
Meaning: Truth is my Identity
This mantra is very purifying and strengthening. Try syncing the sat with the inhale and nam with the exhale.
Wahe Guru
Meaning: Wow God is Amazing
This mantra is very prosperous, joyful and transformational. Try syncing wahe on the inhale and guru on the exhale.
Victory
Meaning: You got this!
This english mantra is very powerful. Try mentally repeating it when you are in business settings and situations of self doubt.
2. Repeat mentally as you go about your day. This works great when you are on a walk or doing any mindless activity such as daily chores. When you realize you have stopped the repetition, just start again. Eventually you will find that the mantra starts running in your mind on autopilot. This is a state called ajapa jap and its very beneficial. You will find that the mantra will seem to start itself up in your mental stream in those times that you especially need it, helping to stabilize and support you. This is really awesome and it works! Instead of ruminating on worry thoughts, you can set your mind to loop the mantra. This also works very well before bed, or while in bed trying to fall asleep. Instead of counting sheep, try mentally reciting mantra. I have found this works very well to relax the body and the mind.
3. Keep going. This practice has immediate benefits but you will see most progress when you are consistent with it over time. Keep a journal and track it. You will be amazed when you look back and see the ways in which your life transforms.
I made a spotify mix for you of some of the most soothing, healing and peaceful mantras here.
Mandalas are visual representations of vibrational patterns that can be manifested as sound. Think of cymatics and how sound creates mandala patterns. When you chant mantra you are vibrating your cells with new, more coherent patterns. This allows the body to go in to a healing state. The above is a special mandala I made recently for my upcoming new book, A Yogis Guide to Energy Protection.
